Placebo versus Advertising

The usual interesting day in the world of health news.

According to the Journal of American Medical Assoc a study was conducted (wonder who sponsored this one) to find out if a placebo pill marked as price reduced and made in China would give pain relief as well as a placebo pill marked as expensive.

I understand the concept of the actual medication versus a placebo but what does this study prove. Doctors all agree that in many cases a placebo works just as well as the "real thing". Why are we spending money on a study of placebo vs placebo? Has cancer been cured and no one told me? Oh, the results of the study, the more expensive pill gave greater relief.

Another study is showing a connection between a past E. coli infection (as long as 20 years) and the current state of your health. There appears to be a connection to diseases that include arthritis, pancreatitis that leads to diabetes, as well as both kidney and liver failure. I am curious, has anyone out there not had a bout with food poisoning?

Of course the battle rages on about what is the best product to wash your hands with. Should you use an antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, dish soap or your favorite bar or soft soap? On one side you have the advice that using an antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer is bad because they only kill the weak strains of bacteria leaving open ground for the hardier bacteria to grow. Another case of advertising a NEED in order to make a profit. The need did not exist before the media thought of it.

Washing your hands is like brushing your teeth. The main thing is to take enough time to make it worth while. Look at your fingernails right this minute. Just what kind of gunk and germs are lurking there.

And the last item on my list today - bed rest. Seems that bed rest when you are sick does not get you better any faster and can in fact slow down your recovery. This idea has got to be sponsored by employers. For me, when I do get the occasional flu or a cold, I will go to bed, watch TV, nap and pretend that I have no responsibilities. For a day or two, my family will take care of the house, dogs and meals. Someone else can do my job.

Sooner or later some study will compare real bed rest with couch rest and the number of times you experienced either or both and a convincing result will be somebody's new advertising concept.

Until next time - smile
